WINGS 2023-2027 Strategic Plan

May 17, 2023

The new WINGS 2023-2027 Strategic Plan has been developed through a participatory process, involving our global network of members, a broad array of stakeholders and partners, our team and our board.  The context for our new 2023-2027 Strategic Plan is the enormous interconnected set of global issues, the 'polycrisis', that we face as humanity. Given this context, as WINGS, we feel the need to urgently accelerate and deepen change, grounded on one imperative: to transform ourselves to become transformative. As an organisation, as a network, and as a field.

Promoting Unhindered Cross-border Giving

April 11, 2023

Receiving and using funding is the means for civil society to operate and implement activities toward a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world. Independent and enabled philanthropy, therefore, is central to the support for civil society's role in the social and democratic ecosystem of any country. However, restrictions on cross-border giving that supports local civil society and philanthropic ecosystem building are growing. These restrictions represent major hurdles to philanthropy worldwide. This policy paper by WINGS provides recommendations to governments and financial authorities about how they can promote policy reform of regulations that currently disincentivise or prohibit cross-border collaboration among philanthropic entities worldwide. French: https://wings.issuelab.org/resource/encourager-les-dons-transfrontaliers.html Spanish: https://wings.issuelab.org/resource/promoviendo-mejores-condiciones-para-las-donaciones-transfonterizas.htmlPortuguese: https://wings.issuelab.org/resource/promovendo-doacoes-transfronteiricas-sem-obstaculos.html

Acting Together to Lift up Philanthropy: WINGS Guidance on How to Build a Supportive Ecosystem

September 8, 2021

The guide shows how a philanthropy support ecosystem can be built. It uses a suite of tools and approaches that can be adapted by people in different countries to build the system that they want, by mapping relationships between organisations and sorting out who does what in order to lift up philanthropy. It is designed to allow for creativity and invention. The goal is to inspire the field by suggesting ways in which its work can be enhanced, rather than providing hard and fast rules. Although specific steps are suggested, these do not imply a rigid process that needs to be followed. Action depends on the context and the particular needs of the philanthropic sector.

Funding Climate Action: Pathways for Philanthropy

May 4, 2023

Increased greenhouse gas pollution is warming the planet quickly, threatening people, cultures, ecosystems, and global stability. We need a worldwide transition to clean, safe, accessible energy. This transition is complex and requires steady, staged progress. Too often, strategies for addressing the twin challenges of protecting the planet and promoting clean energy access have been slowed by divisions between and among nations, governments at all levels, the private sector, nonprofits, and advocates. At risk are the people and communities that need solutions. This report is a call to action. The solutions necessary to combat climate change are systemic and require collaboration across the public, private, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors. Fortunately, there are also hopeful signs of progress, both globally and in the U.S. In the last few years, we have seen an acceleration of government funding, significant Net Zero commitments from corporations, and an important increase in philanthropy focused on climate adaptation and mitigation.
