This is a primer for people interested in learning about community philanthropy organizations and the role they can play in strengthening communities in Central/Eastern Europe. It explains what community philanthropy organizations do and how they work; it describes the challenges for communities in building such organisations in Central/Eastern Europe, and it describes ways in which support organizations are offering assistance, with examples drawn from the region.
Drawing on analysis of 18 community initiatives around the country, this book describes the three key ingredients for building strong communities: committment, resources, and skills. "Community builders" will learn about strategies to build their own organizations and help them become more useful to their constituents and the larger community. The book is based on a five year evaluation of the Leadership Program for Community Foundations, sponsored by the Ford and MacArthur Foundation.
